Of all of Harold Town's (1924-1990) "Popstar/Icon" prints, his double portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is arguably the most admired and sought-after.  
1969, the year this lithograph was created, marked a pivotal time for the couple. They married in the spring and a few months later, recorded Plastic Ono Band's debut album "Live Peace in Toronto 1969," at a local music festival. 
Canada was the backdrop for more legendary moments that year, including their "Bed-In" for peace at Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel, where they stayed for seven days holed up in protest. The demonstration/spectacle/holiday culminated in the recording of their legendary anthem "Give Peace a Chance". 
In December, to close out the year, the couple continued their peace campaign by sponsoring billboards around the world that read, "WAR IS OVER! If You Want It - Happy Christmas From John and Yoko."
Harold Town wisely captured these cultural icons in their prime.
Printmaking is an essential element of Harold Town's practice. In the late 1950s Town established his reputation with a series of unique abstract prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included elements of collage. Throughout his lengthy career, he completed significant and memorable bodies of work as a printmaker alternating between abstraction and representation. 
His portraits of this famous couple are paradigms from his exceptional career.
