"Peace Portfolio" is a beautiful example of Robert Rauschenberg's iconic aesthetic...as well as embodying his generosity and social engagement. 
If you are familiar with the artist's biography you may know of the numerous contributions he made to various social, political, and charitable activities during his lifetime. 
As such, this work was published in 1970 by the Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress. It was included in the “Peace Portfolio I” a fundraiser for “the politics of peace”.
Like Rauschenberg, some of the most high-profile American artists of the 1960s lent their voices and artwork to opposing the Vietnam War. Some of the other artists included in this legendary portfolio include Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Lee Krasner, among others.  
The act of incorporating the physical material of everyday life into artwork was a central part of Robert Rauschenberg's early practice. 
In 1970, he took it a step further by compiling newspaper headlines for a series of legendary silkscreens. While the contents of this work are not directly related to the war, together they paint a picture of the socio-political climate over the decade, for better or worse.
This is a fine example of Rauschenberg's collage work from this period while also demonstrating his social activism.
